About Stephanie

Stephanie Dotson, received her MFA degree at the University of Georgia in Athens GA with highest distinction. She received her BFA from the Kansas City Art institute. Stephanie currently teaches printmaking at SBCC in Santa Barbara CA. 2009 exhibitions of her work include the Atkinson Gallery in Santa Barbara and College of the Channel Islands. Group exhibitions include the Contemporary Arts Forum, David Shelton Gallery in San Antonio and the Michael Rosenthal gallery in Redwood CA. In 2010 Dotson will complete an artist’s residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts and a solo sxhibit at Trace gallery in Athens, GA.

About Nina

Printmaking has been a large part of Nina’s direction and development as an artist. From the first ‘potato’ print she made in Elementary school she has been drawn particularly to relief printing. Also a painter and drawer, she has an affinity for the natural world and this often informs her work. Perhaps it is her Russian/Ukrainian roots that keep her interested in the land – trees, often with a strong figurative presence, are a particularly important part of her visual vocabulary.

The relief woodblock is a visceral, sculptural and physical medium. She incorporates the quality of the wood as a part of the image and she often uses ‘found’ wood for her blocks. In this case the wood is scrap from her long-time studio that was recently demolished. She and her father had built the studio. It is homage to loss.

Nina also works with letterpress printing – hand-setting type, combing text and image. This print was produced on a Vandercook SP15 press using 30 pt. Weiss Roman type along with the type-high woodblock.Nina has been showing her work - prints, paintings, drawings and Artist books - for over 30 years, locally and nationwide.

She received her BA from the College of Creative Studies, UCSB and her MFA from UCSB working with Bruce McCurdy, Harry Reese and others. She currently teaches full-time in the Art Department at Santa Barbara City College and has lived in Santa Barbara since 1973.

About Michael

Michael Jameson has been a serious printmaker since 1999. After he developed a passion with learning the art and techniques of Printmaking from, Pamela Zwehl-Burke, in the Printmaking Department at Santa Barbara City College. From there he learned the art of Solar Printmaking with Master Printer-teacher Elaine Levasseur through Continuing Adult Education classes. I find there is a level of richness achieved in tone, texture, and form in printmaking from traditional methods to the most Modern techniques that makes printmaking itself an evolving force in experience in its making and enjoyment in viewing that is continuous and ongoing. One theme with seems to be almost always present in my images is that of Portraiture if not always on an extremely realistic level with people, animals, and plants, they are always to aspire to a transformational level of viewing pleasure.

Michael has shown Prints locally and nationally in Group Juried Shows. He has had two One Man shows locally, "Exceptional Beings" [Portraits of Mankind and Other Animals], 2008. And "Bovinity" Honoring Livestock, In the Year of the Ox. 2009. Michael has won numerous awards in Printmaking for "Best Work On Paper", "Most Creative Image." He was chosen to display a print for an extended period of time at the "William Pen Foundation" in Philadelphia Pa. In the past he has been a member of the Santa Barbara Art Association, a Docent at the Santa Barbara Museum Of Art, he is a current member of the Santa Barbara Printmakers. He lives in Santa Barbara, Ca. with his partner,Tom, and dog Harold.

About Rafael

Rafael Perea de la Cabada, an award-winning artist, was born in Mexico City and has lived in Santa Barbara, CA since 1987. Perea received a degree from the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Printmaking in Mexico City and went on to earn his M.F.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

He has exhibited at many galleries and museums in Southern California including the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Contemporary Arts Forum, the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena and the Hunsaker-Schlesinger Gallery in Santa Monica. He has also shown in New York, Washington, Tennessee, Texas, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Croatia, Spain and Germany. His work is included in numerous public and private collections in Mexico, Switzerland, France, Germany and the United States.

Rafael teaches Advanced Painting and Drawing in the Fine Arts Department at Santa Barbara City College and has served as a Master Artist for mentorship programs, master classes, and mural projects for both the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and The Arts Fund. He recently completed a Public Art Commission with designer Richard Irvine (IrvineCabada ArtDesign) for the West Beach Pedestrian Improvement Project for the City of Santa Barbara.

About Libby

Libby Smith is an artist with a wide variety of interests. She has a particular passion for painting and drawing and received her Master of Fine Arts degree under Howard Warshaw at UCSB. Her subjects and their interpretation always based in observation, range from figures & portraits to land & seascapes to animals & still lives.

In the last couple of years she’s become interested in solar plate printmaking through classes at Santa Barbara City College’s Continuing Education Division. Solar plate can capture the sensuality of an etched line as well as a brushed gesture.

Libby’s passion for art also includes teaching. Since 1980 she has been a member of the art faculty at SBCC, and is currently teaching Figure Drawing at Continuing Education.

“For me painting and drawing are vehicles for seeing, exploration, discovery and travel. It’s what I use-it’s what I teach.”

About Dug:

Dug Uyesaka's quizzical outlook on life and love of the arts germinated while growing up in the 1950’s and 60’s in the fertile San Joaquin Valley. Living out in the boondocks provided many, many, hours to roam the country side and appreciate the slow side of life and fueled his passion to draw and make “stuff” from his imagination. He pursued painting and silk screen while at UCSB and went on to study graphic design and multimedia at SBCC. He also worked at a local film production company providing graphic design and media management. Dug has been a working artist and involved in the community arts scene since the 1970’s. “Being able to nurture and help facilitate our children’s imaginations and artistic talents at Laguna and in the community is a gift. It fuels my spirit and hopefully enriches their lives forever. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

Dug works mostly in assemblage but has fallen in love with printmaking the last several years thanks to the guidance and support of Elaine Levasseur and Sara Norquay at the Adult Education Center and all the good folks of the Santa Barbara Printmakers Society. He was recently awarded a William T. Colville foundation grant to further his experience.

About Dane

Working in a wide range of mediums, from installations to prints, Dane Goodman has shown his artwork in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Seattle. His work is in museum, corporate, and private collections. Locally his work in the collection of Santa Barbara Museum of Art; University Art Museum, University of California, Santa Barbara; The Berkus Collection, Santa Barbara County Arts Commission; and the Westmont Museum of Art.

Goodman is a recipient of the County of Santa Barbara Individual Artist Award for printmaking. He has been nominated for the Los Angeles based Friends of Contemporary Art’s FOCA Fellowship and the National Awards in the Visual Arts. He has been a lecturer and artist-in-residence at colleges and universities in California and the Midwest. Twice he has been asked to be a panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts in Washington, D. C. He is the director of the Atkinson Gallery, Santa Barbara City College and is married to the artist, Marie Schoeff.

About Teresa

Teresa Zepeda is a printmaker. Her main focus is on etchings and silkscreens.. Teresa’s art has always involved realism, not just making images look like photographs, but giving them a depth and a feel that you cannot get from a photograph. Etching is an excellent medium for this because it gives richness and tones unlike no other medium. Teresa has recently moved on to silkscreen, finding a world of color after working for years almost exclusively in black and white. She has shown her work in many juried shows both locally and nationwide, including the Janet Turner National Print Competition, The Los Angeles Printmaking Society National Show, the Delta National Small Prints Exhibition among others. She learned her love for printmaking at Santa Barbara City College, where she spent years and countless hours in the printmaking lab making art. She now resides in Sacramento with her partner Kate and their son Enzo.

About Nina

Draft horses are so solid and powerful, grounded by those big hooves. When at Scripps College (BA 1956) and Claremont Graduate University (MFA 1964) I used to draw draft horses at the LA County Fair, and I began printmaking in Claremont under Paul Darrow. I continued some years later under John Page, who had studied with Mauricio Lasanskky. I was living in Iowa and teaching as an Adjunct at the University of Northern Iowa. I used to draw there at various draft horse sales and fairs. I still find some draft horses to sketch before the Fiesta parade. I have been working lately with Siu Zimmerman and Elaine LeVasseur in Adult Education printmaking classes, but I sunned this plate in my backyard and printed the edition on a small press in my garage/studio. In both clay sculpture and printmaking, my main subjects are animals. I enjoy watching them, studying them through drawing, trying to capture their various forms and gestures.

About Carolyn

Carolyn is a draftsperson and printmaker with a passion for meaningful lines. She received her art degree at Mills College and continued art studies at UCLA. Her work has always been centered on the graphic expression of her personal mark-making and image-making processes. Since moving to Santa Barbara in 2000, she has participated in many drawing groups on the Central Coast. Her method of turning selected drawings into etchings through solar printing has become a natural extension of her life long creative practice.

About Marie:

Marie’s studio work is primarily oil paintings and drawings, yet she has experimented with printmaking over the years. Her first round with monotypes was in 1991 working as a guest artist with Larry Fodor at Black Mesa Press in New Mexico. In 1995 she editioned a pair of mezzotint prints with Leslie Sutcliffe of El Moro Etching Editions in Los Osos, California. Over the last few years she has worked with Elaine LeVasseur, master printer, exploring dry point, collagraph and woodblock processes. Her recent studio work includes a large suite of trace monotypes.

The intersection of drawing and printmaking is where her interest lies.

“I am particularly intrigued by the dry point and trace monotype techniques. Each technique is a unique hybrid of drawing and printmaking in which the printmaking process amplifies the drawing process and vice versa.”

Marie’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Santa Barbara. Among other collections, her large-scale drawings are in the permanent collection of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission.

Marie Schoeff is on the faculty of the art department at Santa Barbara City College. She has an MFA degree from Hunter College in NYC where she lived before moving to Santa Barbara. She resides in Santa Barbara with her husband, Dane Goodman, who is an artist and the director of the Atkinson Gallery.

About Pamela:

Forever interested in what the natural world means, Pamela Zwehl-Burke has spent many years looking, to encode and decode visual matters. She learned (at the Hochschule fuer bildende Kuenste, Kassel, Staatliches Seminar, Goettingen (both Germany), California State University, Northridge and the University of Southern California) and then taught (at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and Santa Barbara City College) drawing, figure drawing, printmaking, design and artists' books. After years of helping others to unfold their skills and visions, she (retired since 2008)now takes time and opportunity to pursue her own.

Her work manifests in a variety of scale, format and material, but the intention and subject is for the most part commonplace visual experience re-seen and re-excerpted: animal, vegetable, mineral, and their "stories". Seeing is as much the subject as the seen.

She lives with partner Harold McHugh and many animals in Santa Ynez. Interactions with two daughters and their daughters, friends, as well as the beloved extended family, richen her life.

About Nicole:

While painting is Nicole Strasburg's primary medium, printmaking is the constant diversion. After years of pursuing her career in painting Nicole wanted to return to drawing and found printmaking a good vehicle in which to study mark making and composition. Her focus while studying art at UC Santa Barbara was charcoal drawings, subscribing to the philosophy of Georgia O'Keefe that if you can't say it well in black and white why bother with color.

"Experimenting with other mediums, including printmaking, is a great tool to explore design and composition with the belief that all paths lead back to a richer understanding of painting."

A devout studio painter, Nicole visually records her inspiration with sketches and photographs while out on walks with her dogs. Composing and editing are done back in the studio from the series of images taken in the field. "Simplification of the environment to create a more universal experience within the painting is my goal. Good design will always take precedence over being true to the particulars of any location."

Nicole spends most days in her Santa Barbara studio with her two border collies and is frequently visited by her husband, who kindly reminds her to go outside.
